Herbert Smith

Herbert Smith's experience advising on alternatives to non-renewable resources and carbon intensive energy goes back to the 1980s when we worked on setting up the UK's Non-Fossil Fuel Purchasing Agency (NFFPA). Since then, our clean energy practice has grown significantly with involvement covering every aspect of clean energy including carbon capture and storage, hydrogen power, waste to energy, renewables (including offshore wind, onshore wind, solar, hydro and wave power), clean coal, biofuels and biomass.

Our clean energy experience, in conjunction with our expertise in the more traditional aspects of the energy industry also means that our dedicated team of energy lawyers are well placed to assist clients with the larger carbon abatement projects (such as carbon capture and storage projects) which require specialist knowledge of feedstock contracts, power projects, upstream oil and gas, gas storage and emission regulations.

Our recent experience in hydrogen power and carbon capture storage includes advising BP and Rio Tinto's joint venture company "Hydrogen Energy" on the multi-billion dollar hydrogen energy power project in Abu Dhabi, Centrica on its 800MW "carbon capture ready" clean coal power facility in the UK and bidders on the UK government's carbon capture and storage competition.
