Tata Steel

Tata Steel is part of the Tata Group, one of the world’s fastest growing and most respected corporations whose businesses span 7 major industry
sectors: engineering, communications and IT, materials, services, energy, consumer products and chemicals. Tata Group has operations in more than 80 countries and it's total revenue in 2008-09 was $71 billion.

Tata Steel itself is one of the world’s top 500 companies, is a top 10 global steel producer, and is the 2nd most geographically-diverse steel company. We have an annual crude steel capacity of 28 million tonnes and employ more than 80,000 people across 5 continents and 26 countries and customers. Turnover in 2009-10 was $22.8 billion.

Tata Steel Europe is the second largest steel producer in that region with a crude steel capacity of 20 mtpa. It employs approximately 35,000 employees worldwide and has major manufacturing sites in the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium. It has sales offices and service centres in over 40 countries that support being a supplier to many of the most demanding market sectors worldwide including automotive, construction, packaging, mechanical engineering, rail and other transport. Tata Steel Europe has been part of the Tata Steel Group since 2007.

Tata Steel is committed to reducing it’s CO2 emissions and a climate change strategy has been instigated that contains three main elements; incremental improvement of current processes to increase energy efficiency and reduce
CO2 emissions by 20% compared to 1990 levels, development of new and improved products and services that reduce the relevant life-cycle carbon footprints, and investment in longer term breakthrough technologies.

As part of the latter initiative Tata Steel is a core member of the Ultra–Low Carbon Dioxide Steelmaking initiative (ULCOS). Phase I of ULCOS has identified four process concepts that could lead to a reduction in CO2 emissions of at least 50% compared to current best practice. Three concepts require implementation of carbon capture and storage technology, with the most advanced now ready to be demonstrated at a large scale (annualised iron production >1Mt, and capture of 90% of the associated CO2). Such a demonstration will form part of Phase II of the ULCOS programme (2010-2015)."
