Cost of developing CCS
How much will CCS cost me? How much will it add to my electricity bill?
Our demand for electricity is likely to increase, despite energy efficiency measures, and many of our older power stations require replacement as they are unlikely to meet environmental standards. Ofgem has estimated that we need to invest at least £110bn in new generation and transmission assets in electricity – over double the rate of the last decade.
However we decide to meet our energy needs in the future, most analysts foresee that household energy bills will increase. Some of this increase could be offset by improved efficiencies in energy usage, but we still need to invest in our capability to generate low-carbon electricity.
CCS is a cost effective method of delivering the low-carbon electricity that we need. Per unit of electricity, CCS is one of the cheapest of the low carbon technologies. Per household, the first CCS plants will cost less than £2/month.
