Sasol Limited is an innovative and competitive global energy company. Headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa it is engaged in the commercial production and marketing of chemicals and liquid fuels; with a growing interest in oil and gas exploration.

Sasol was established in 1950 by the South African government to manufacture fuels and chemicals from indigenous raw materials. The company has developed world-leading technology for the commercial production of synthetic fuels and chemicals from low-grade coal as well as the conversion of natural gas to environment-friendly fuels and chemicals.

An advantage that a Coal-to-Liquids (CTL) facility has over a conventional coal-fired power plant is that a significant portion of the CO2 emission stream from the CTL process is available in pure form. This means that capture cost from a CTL facility will be a fraction of the cost compared with a conventional coal-fired power plant.

Sasol is currently investigating the potential for geological storage in many of the areas where new CTL ventures are under investigation. Sasol has commissioned external key technical experts in the field of CO2 transport and sequestration to perform pre-feasibility studies on geological storage in these countries.

Sasol is also investigating the possibility of sequestrating CO2 in South Africa via Enhanced Coal Bed Methane (ECBM). The feasibility of performing a pilot injection project to test the technology fundamentals of ECBM is being studied.

In support of sequestration research in South Africa, Sasol is proud to announce its participation in developing a South African CO2 Storage Atlas with a consortium of companies including Eskom, PetroSA, Anglo Coal and the South African National Energy Research Institute (SANERI).

Sasol is committed to sustainable development and believes CCS is an essential part of the portfolio of solutions and initiatives that will be necessary to achieve sustainable development objectives.
