On Tuesday 18 March, the CCSA hosted a hybrid panel event focused on the recommendations of our recently published report “Driving Cost reductions and value for money in CCUS”.
The event was attended by 90 people online, with a further 20 in the room, and included representatives from DESNZ, No 10 and Ofgem. Speakers included Andrew White, Director at KPMG; Emma Harniman, Manager of Engineering at Bechtel Corporation; Aniruddha Sharma, CEO of Carbon Clean; Greg Williams, Head of External Affairs at Evero; Chris Thackeray, Global CCS Lead at Baringa; and David Parkin, Director at Progressive Energy. You can read the report here.
Some key takeaways included:
The need to urgently get projects deployed so that the levers for cost reductions can start to be pulled and realised in the future.
The need for innovative contracting approaches to help reduce procurement costs and appropriately assign risk.
The importance of innovation for helping to standardise carbon capture technology and deliver modular solutions that optimise space.
Expanding cross-border CO₂ transport and storage and developing GGR markets to reduce reliance on government revenue support.
The role of government-led cost-sharing approaches to improve efficiency.
