- 1. Helping to secure a resilient future for a reliable supply of British-made cement and lime
- 2. Safeguarding around 2000 jobs at the cement and lime operators and creating an additional 1500 roles during construction
- 3. Together with MNZ, the projects would attract around £5 billion of capital investment in the UK
- 4. Reducing the levels of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere by 3 million tonnes every year.
About
Peak Cluster is a major carbon capture and storage (CCS) infrastructure project designed to futureproof some of the UK’s most important manufacturing industries while significantly reducing industrial carbon emissions.
Around 40% of the UK’s cement and lime is produced in Derbyshire and Staffordshire, supporting thousands of skilled jobs, supporting communities and supplying materials essential for construction, infrastructure, agriculture and everyday life.
The organisations, normally competitors, have joined together, alongside Morecambe Net Zero (MNZ), to develop and construct the infrastructure required to capture, transport and store carbon dioxide (CO₂) avoidably generated during manufacturing processes.
CO₂ will be captured at the cement and lime works before being transported via an underground pipeline to the MNZ storage site in the Irish Sea, where it will be permanently and securely stored offshore in depleted gas reservoirs. By utilising existing offshore infrastructure and expertise, the project provides a reliable long-term solution for managing the UK’s industrial emissions.
Once operational, is expected to capture and permanently store more than three million tonnes of CO₂ each year, helping to secure UK manufacturing, protect skilled jobs, strengthen supply chains and support long-term industrial investment across the region.
