CCSA Press Release: CCSA Brings Nordic Leaders Together to Accelerate CCUS Deployment

  • Policymakers and industry from Sweden, Denmark and Norway came together in Stockholm to explore the next phase of carbon management
  • Scandinavia is building strong momentum on CCUS, with cross-border cooperation needed to scale up
  • The Nordic experience offers important lessons for Europe’s wider carbon management ambitions

[Stockholm, 30 September] The Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA) today brought together policymakers, industry leaders and carbon management experts in Stockholm for the latest edition of its Country Spotlight Series, focusing on the opportunities and challenges for CCUS deployment across Scandinavia.

The event gathered representatives from Sweden, Denmark and Norway to discuss the region’s rapidly developing carbon management landscape, the role of CCUS in industrial decarbonisation, and the importance of cross-border cooperation in building a thriving European carbon management market.

Opening the event, Olivia Powis, CEO, CCSA, said:

“Scandinavia is showing what can be achieved when governments, industry and stakeholders work together to create the conditions for CCUS to move from ambition to delivery. Across the region, we are seeing strong policy momentum, innovative projects, and growing cooperation around carbon management. The challenge now is to build on this momentum and ensure that the right infrastructure, investment and regulatory frameworks are in place to scale deployment.”

The event opened with keynote remarks from Helena Dyrssen, State Secretary to the Swedish Minister for Climate and the Environment, followed by remarks from MP Rickard Nordin of Centrepartiet, showing that Swedish policymakers are actively supporting the development of the sector.

A panel discussion brought together Martin Flack of the Swedish Energy Agency, Katrine Thomsen of the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities, and Dag Erlend Henriksen of the Norwegian Government. The discussion explored developments across the three countries, including the policy frameworks, infrastructure and cooperation needed to accelerate carbon management deployment.

Discussions highlighted the importance of creating a supportive investment and policy environment for CCUS, while strengthening cooperation between governments and industry across national borders. With projects progressing across Scandinavia, participants also considered how the region can contribute to the development of an integrated European carbon management market.

This event is part of CCSA’s Country Spotlight Series, which brings together policymakers, industry and other stakeholders to examine regional and national CCUS opportunities across Europe.

About the CCSA
CCUS, or Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage, is a key low carbon solution – vital to meeting the EU’s climate targets. CCUS enables industrial decarbonisation as well as the production of clean power, clean products (such as cement and chemicals) and clean hydrogen – which can also be used to decarbonise industry. In addition, CCUS also enables greenhouse gas removal from the atmosphere through Direct Air Capture with Storage (DACS) or Bioenergy with CCS (BECCS).

The CCSA is the trade association accelerating the commercial deployment of CCUS, with offices in Belgium and in the UK. We work with members, governments and other organisations to ensure CCUS is developed and deployed at the pace and scale necessary to meet net zero goals and deliver sustainable growth across regions and nations.

The CCSA currently has over 120 member companies who are active in exploring and developing different applications of carbon capture and removals, CO2 transportation by pipeline and ship, utilisation, geological storage, and other permanent storage solutions, end-users in the power, industry, waste management, fuels, and hydrogen production sectors, plus supply chain, engineering, construction and management, legal and financial consulting sectors.
