Earlier today, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, announced an expansion of the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme to bring down electricity costs for manufacturers.

Following the announcement, UK Policy Manager Max Musing, said: “This is an important and welcome step in supporting manufacturing businesses that are investing in decarbonisation, including through technologies such as CCUS. We are pleased to see that the Government has taken on board CCSA feedback and widened the scope of support to include sectors involved in CO₂ transport and storage, cement manufacturing, and the treatment of non-hazardous waste.

In a challenging economic context, measures that help reduce industrial electricity costs can make a real difference to firms striving to remain competitive while cutting emissions, and in turn support the jobs that underpin local economies. However, it is crucial that the Government continues to support all heavy industries by addressing energy costs and maintaining a competitive environment that gives businesses the confidence to keep investing, so that they can stay and thrive in the UK.”
