Today, the Government has set out its proposed level for the seventh Carbon Budget, which sets a target of ~87% emissions reduction in the period 2038 to 2042 – endorsed by the Environmental Audit Committee and the Climate Change Committee.

In response to this announcement, Olivia Powis, CEO of the CCSA, said: “The CCSA welcomes the Government’s proposed level for the Seventh Carbon Budget (CB7), laying the legislation to set an 87% emissions reduction by 2042. This level of ambition reinforces the need to maintain momentum in delivering the infrastructure required to strengthen UK energy security, while providing a clear long-term signal that helps build investor confidence in CCUS projects.”

“As highlighted in the Climate Change Committee’s advice, CCUS will be essential to achieving CB7, supporting reliable clean power, decarbonising heavy industry, and safeguarding and creating high-quality jobs across the UK.”

“The UK already has a strong pipeline of more than 100 CCUS projects in development, with the potential to capture and store 77 million tonnes of CO₂ each year by the mid-2030s. As the sector moves into construction, sustained investment, timely decision-making and clear delivery plans will be essential to unlocking this pipeline and bringing projects to market. Delivering these projects at scale will reduce emissions, strengthen industrial competitiveness, and drive long-term economic growth.”
