CCUS can help the Burnham Government deliver growth

London, [20 July 2026] – The Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA) has congratulated Andy Burnham on his appointment as Prime Minister, saying carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) can play a major role in delivering the Government’s ambitions to reindustrialise Britain.

With the UK’s first CCUS projects now under construction, the sector is already creating jobs, supporting UK businesses and attracting private investment. As more projects are developed, CCUS can help protect industries such as cement, chemicals, refining and manufacturing, while enabling them to produce the low-carbon products that businesses and consumers increasingly want.

The first projects in HyNet and the East Coast Cluster have already delivered over £4 billion in supply chain contracts and are supporting approximately 5,500 construction jobs.

CCSA analysis shows that the first four CCUS clusters could contribute around £8 billion a year to the UK economy by 2030, while wider deployment could unlock £26 billion of private investment and support around 50,000 jobs by the 2030s.

The CCSA is calling on the Burnham Government to take action in its first 100 days. It is urging the Government to progress filling up the HyNet and East Coast Cluster stores, and maintain momentum on deploying the next projects and clusters. It is also calling for a date to be secured for the EU-UK Summit to progress cross-border CO₂ transport and storage, creating an export industry worth up to £30 billion annually by 2050.

The CCSA is continuing to urge the Government to maintain momentum by progressing the next wave of CCUS projects, awarding new contracts through the 2027 Spending Review and putting in place the policies needed to establish a competitive, self-sustaining UK CCUS market.
