[London, 20 May] The Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA) has welcomed A Well-Adapted UK from the Climate Change Committee (CCC), saying the growing threat from extreme weather highlights the need to strengthen the UK’s resilience while accelerating decarbonisation.
Olivia Powis, CEO of the CCSA, said:
“Today’s report is a stark reminder that climate change is already affecting lives, livelihoods and critical infrastructure across the UK.”
“The Climate Change Committee is right to call for urgent action to strengthen the UK’s resilience to extreme weather. Alongside adaptation measures, the UK must continue accelerating emissions reduction and investment in resilient low-carbon infrastructure.”
“CCUS technologies are essential to achieving this. They enable industries to decarbonise while protecting jobs, supporting energy security and helping the UK reach net zero at pace.”
The CCSA said investment in decarbonisation and resilience today will help lower long-term costs, strengthen industrial competitiveness and support more secure, reliable energy systems. CCUS and hydrogen technologies can play a vital role in reducing emissions while driving sustainable economic growth.
Embedding resilience into infrastructure planning from the outset will also help reduce future repair and retrofit costs, ensuring critical energy infrastructure can operate safely under increasingly extreme weather conditions.
The report reinforces the importance of maintaining momentum behind the UK’s carbon capture, hydrogen and wider industrial decarbonisation programmes as part of a resilient long-term energy strategy.
As climate risks intensify, the case for deploying CCUS at pace is essential.

About the CCSA
CCUS, or Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage, is a key low-carbon solution that supports industrial decarbonisation, clean power, clean hydrogen and greenhouse gas removals, including Direct Air Capture with Storage (DACS) and Bioenergy with CCS (BECCS).
The CCSA is the trade association accelerating the commercial deployment of CCUS in the UK and Europe, working with industry, governments and other stakeholders to help deliver net zero and sustainable growth.
The CCSA represents more than 100 member companies across the full CCUS value chain, including capture, transport, utilisation, storage, power, industry, hydrogen and the wider supply chain.
