Boston Alternative Energy Facility (BAEF) being developed by Alternative Use Boston Projects Limited (AUBP) is a 102MWe Renewable Energy from Waste (EfW) power station. Granted Development Consent Order (DCO) in July 2023, located Boston, utilizing the river for fuel and product transport, reducing road traffic.

The project will create approximately 250 construction jobs and 120 operational jobs, benefiting the local economy. Collaboration with Boston College integrates the project into educational curricula, offering diverse job opportunities.

The facility will process RDF, reducing Methane and CO2 emissions. CO2 emissions will be captured, and ash will be recycled into new products. Bulk RDF transportation via river transport will minimize road congestion and emissions. Environmental impact is offset by creating 120 acres of mitigation and compensation land.

The scheme is a National Infrastructure Project with a consented DCO, winning National Infrastructure Project of the Year in 2024 and runner-up in 2023. It demonstrates renewable energy production from waste and engages in bulk transportation via ship.

The facility will have five revenue streams: Gate Fee, Electricity, Lightweight Aggregate (LWA), Carbon Capture, and District Heat Network. The plant will be built with three lines, minimizing downtime, and will take 3.5 years to the first power generation.

The project aims to be the greenest, most efficient way of handling waste. It will boost the local economy and create jobs without additional strain on infrastructure.
