DESFA, the Hellenic Gas Transmission System Operator, founded in 2007 and owned by the Greek State (34%) and SENFLUGA S.A. (66%), is responsible for the development, operation and maintenance  of the National Natural Gas Transmission System and the LNG Terminal in the island of Revithoussa in Attica.

With significant experience and highly qualified staff, we make a decisive contribution to energy security and the diversification of supply sources in Greece and the wider region, positioning the country as an energy gateway for the whole of Europe. We strengthen the competitiveness and extroversion of the Greek economy, having been established as a reliable partner in the development, operation, and management of gas infrastructure in Southeast Europe and beyond. Being deeply dedicated to advancing the energy transition strategy, DESFA plays a key part in the European-wide initiatives to fight against climate change, by investing in green infrastructure, including both hydrogen and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) initiatives.

Especially in CO2, our flagship initiative is the ApolloCO2 project, which aims to establish Greece’s first large-scale Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) hub. More specifically, the scope of ApolloCO2 includes the development of a gaseous CO2 pipeline network in Greece, connecting mainly industrial emitters with a liquefaction and export terminal based at Revithoussa island in Attica, which will also be developed adjacent to LNG import terminal, leveraging the cold energy there to provide a cost-efficient solution for the CO2 liquefaction element. The liquefied CO2 will then be transported via ships for permanent sequestration to Prinos facility in Greece or to other storage facilities in the Mediterranean (e.g., Ravenna storage site, Italy).

The Liquefaction Terminal element of ApolloCO2 has been awarded €169.3 million grant from the EU Innovation Fund, while the whole project has also been included in the latest EU PCI/PMI list.
