Full Name: Güngen Denizcilik ve Ticaret A.Ş.

‘Güngen Denizcilik ve Ticaret A.Ş.’ (Güngen Maritime and Trading JSC) is owned by four members of a Turkish-Dutch family, registered and based in Turkiye.  Gungen operates as a dedicated shipowning company, managing all operations in-house.

From its origins in the 1970s as a small shipper of sugar molasses, the company evolved to focus on crude oil shipping, signing its first contract for a new “Suezmax” carrier in 1998.  Over two decades, the fleet grew to 6 very high-specification Suezmax tankers.

We manage all operations in-house across our two offices in Ankara and Istanbul, with our onshore team of 59 professionals.

Our flat hierarchy ensures agile decision-making and sustainable, long-term operations. We aim to lead by example, with transparency and strict regulatory compliance as the cornerstones of our philosophy. As engineers, we place immense importance on designing and continuously improving our company processes.

All of our crew members are Gungen employees, most of them long-term. Our vessels operate with a complement of 27, including up to four cadets.

As the maritime industry navigates an increasingly stringent regulatory landscape—with evolving emissions standards such as IMO NZF and CII, FuelEU, and EU ETS, our commitment to continuous improvement has naturally evolved toward decarbonization. Leveraging our in-house technical expertise, we are expanding our focus beyond conventional crude transport to pioneer zero-emission energy shipping solutions.

Today, Güngen is spearheading a Joint Development Project—dubbed GUNGEN OCEANZ (Onboard Carbon Emissions Abatement for Net Zero)—with European industrial partners to engineer and build  new LNG carrier fleet to a pioneering design. Incorporating state-of-the-art Onboard CCS technology, this vessel will dramatically reduce its fuel-related GHG emissions. With this project, Güngen is positioned to make a major impact on the maritime market as the owner and operator of the world’s cleanest LNG carrier fleet.
