JOB TITLE: Chief Executive, Carbon Capture & Storage Association

 

THE CCSA

The CCSA is the trade association promoting the deployment of Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) as an essential solution to deliver net zero emissions.

We work with members, governments and other organisations to ensure CCUS is developed and deployed at the pace and scale necessary to meet net zero goals and deliver sustainable growth across regions and nations.

CCSA members are drawn from a wide range of sectors such as industry, equipment manufacturing, power, oil and gas, academia and regional bodies – as well as the associated supply chain and service sector.

The CCSA has offices in London and Brussels.

 

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

To act on behalf of the CCSA Board and its members, leading the work of the association to support the deployment of CCUS. The role will be responsible for producing policy positions and implementing a strategy to engage with key stakeholders including, press, parliamentary and Government officials to promote the deployment of CCUS to address climate challenges and sustainable development needs.

The role is responsible for developing the association’s profile, building strong relations with national and international bodies that influence CCUS and the development of a work programme that supports the association’s members. This is an exciting time for the growth of CCS, and the CEO will also be expected to grow the membership and improve the finances of the CCSA, enabling the association to broaden its engagement with various stakeholders and make greater impact.

The role will be responsible for managing the CCSA’s two offices in London and Brussels.

The CEO’s direct reporting is to the Chair of the CCSA board.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Formulating and implementing a strategy for the CCSA that promotes an effective investment framework for CCUS deployment and implementation.

Promoting and representing the interests of the CCSA, and relevant associated bodies, to national and international government bodies, parliament, industry, and other organisations.

Maintain a continual and ongoing external communications programme whereby the CCSA’s interests are kept to the fore and be the CCSA spokesperson when required.

Co-ordinating and promoting a research, communications and public affairs strategy to support the implementation and further development of CCUS.

Establishing and promoting European and other international links relevant to the development of CCS and associated measures. This includes the delivery of activities which provide support to EU CCUS stakeholders.

Be responsible for developing annual budgets for approval by the CCSA and maintaining the expenditure within the adopted budget. Be responsible for securing growth in the association’s income, including from membership fees, grants and conferences.

Enable the proper and effective functioning of the CCSA Board and other committees established by the Association.

Recruiting, managing and developing talent across the association’s two offices in London and Brussels and manage development and succession planning.

 

Essential Education

  • BSc degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. This could include science and technology, environmental management, economics or social and political sciences.

Essential experience and job requirements

  • Track record as a Leader, demonstrating strategic acumen and the ability to lead and manage talent and build effective teams
  • Track record of successful engagement with external stakeholders, including government and regulators, partner organisations and media
  • Evidence of thought leadership such as publication of papers, presentations at conferences etc.
  • Extensive relevant experience with proven competencies in policy development and advocacy.
  • A sound understanding of relevant UK and EU governmental and policy making processes.
  • Excellent networking, communication and influencing skills.
  • A proactive, self-starter with proven ability to work on and manage multiple simultaneous work fronts and achieve successful outcomes.
  • A broad understanding of the science of climate change and the technologies that can be used to transition towards net zero and longer-term climate sustainability.
  • Understanding of the scope of CCUS and its applicability to hydrogen, industry, power and negative emissions/ CO2 sequestration value.

Desirable criteria and qualifications

  • Additional post graduate qualification in relevant subject.
  • Understanding of the role of trade associations in supporting businesses
  • Good technical understanding of the CCUS value chain
  • An awareness of subsurface uncertainty and risk management.
  • Experience in applying and assuring compliance with regulations.
  • Experience of leading multi-disciplinary teams to co-create strategic approaches through successful engagement with stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of international law, and UN processes including the UNFCCC
  • Knowledge of policy development and legislation in non-European countries.
