The UKCCSRC is pleased to be hosting another series of industry and policy led ‘what are our research needs workshops’. The virtual workshops are intended to inform UK researchers and identify the key research needs, which will be published and linked to the scope of the next UKCCSRC flexible funding call in early 2022. The workshops will include a series of presentations from industry, policy makers and regulators. Following the presentations, there will be an exercise to identify the key research areas with input from other industry, policy makers and regulators on the call. The final part of the workshop will be opened up for UK academic questions, mainly around clarification of the research needs that have been identified.

Natural gas is the largest fuel type in UK energy generation. A significant majority of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants in the UK are currently fuelled by natural gas (72% of fuel input, representing 8.5% of all UK gas demand). Modelling undertaken by BEIS of the impact of new natural gas CHP plants on the UK electricity market concluded that from 2032, unabated natural gas CHP would begin to displace an increasing proportion of low carbon generation, effectively raising carbon emissions and jeopardising the achievement of carbon budget targets.

The decarbonisation of CHP sites is therefore becoming increasingly urgent.

Fuel switching to biomass energy combined with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) is an attractive option for CHP plants, and offers an opportunity for sites to access the negative emission market. The use of negative emission technologies (NETs) such as BECCS is considered essential if the UK is to meet its net zero target by 2050. It provides organisations from hard-to-decarbonise sectors, such as heavy industry and those that rely on heavy-duty transport, an opportunity to balance their residual emissions.

There are estimated to be up to 500 industrial CHP sites across the UK that would be suitable for fuel switching to biomass and retrofitting with CCS – i.e. BECCS – leading to significant carbon savings.

The All Party Parliamentary Group on Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (APPG CCUS) are holding their next virtual meeting on Monday 22nd of November 16:00-17:45. The meeting will be an opportunity to understand the crucial role that CCUS clusters will play in achieving net zero across the UK; in Scotland, Teesside, Humber, South Wales and the North West.

The CCUS APPG is delighted to welcome all the UK’s proposed CCUS clusters and hear from them in more detail on how they can reduce carbon emissions and contribute to decarbonisation and regional growth across the UK. On the 19^th of October, the Government announced the first clusters that will be taken forward in Track-1 of the cluster sequencing process. It is now critical that Government urgently provides clarity on the timeline for Track-2 and the wider deployment of all CCUS clusters in the UK, as well as pushing forward with the development of CCUS business models, including ones for CO₂ shipping, all in order to accelerate investment decisions in the long-term rollout of CCUS. The CCUS APPG meeting will be a great opportunity for MPs and the wider public to hear from and engage with the proposed UK CCUS clusters.
