Commercial-Scale CCS: A New Era Begins

Across the world, open-access, commercial-scale Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is no longer a distant vision—it is now becoming reality. In the North Sea the Norwegian Northern Lights project is set to launch commercial operations this year. Momentum continues to build, with multiple projects in Europe and beyond reaching Financial Investment Decision (FID) in late 2024 and early 2025, marking a pivotal shift toward large-scale implementation.

Recent geological storage licence awards in the EU and Norway further strengthen the North Sea’s role as a key hub for gigaton-scale storage capacity.  At the same time, licence equity deals are emerging in Europe as across the world, as companies seek to build balanced portfolios of potential storage sites, mitigating risk and uncertainty in this evolving landscape.

This transition presents a unique opportunity for geoscientists and engineers to re-purpose their expertise, applying their skills to one of the greatest challenges of our time—securing a sustainable future through the numerous multi-millon-ton geological storage solutions now moving ahead worldwide.  But significant non-geotechnical hurdles remain, including early-stage financing, pre-FID costs, regulatory uncertainties and public perception.

Despite these challenges, CCS remains a vital tool in the global effort to reduce hard to abate emissions at scale, and ongoing advancements continue to refine its viability. Now is the time to engage, innovate, and lead in shaping this critical transition.

Exploring the future of Geological CO2 Storage

For GESGB members, the world of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)—with its wells, reservoirs, and sealing cap-rocks—may feel familiar. Yet, in many ways, it presents new challenges and opportunities. The dual imperatives of cost reduction and long-term public safety demand an unprecedented level of collaboration and transparency.

Building on the notable success of previous years and responding to growing membership interest, GESGB’s fourth one-day symposium will dive into the evolving geo-technical landscape of geological CO₂ storage. Attendees will gain essential insights and skills to navigate this rapidly advancing field, ensuring they remain at the forefront of this critical energy transition.

Unlock Opportunities at the Symposium

This symposium offers a dynamic platform for learning, research, and exploration of emerging technologies. Attendees will have the chance to network, collaborate, and forge connections with potential partners, driving innovation and shared expertise.

Beyond technical insights, discussions will cover vital industry topics, including supply chain dynamics, employment trends, technical collaboration, public perceptions, engagement strategies, and health, safety, and environmental (HSE) considerations.

Whether you’re seeking fresh perspectives, strategic partnerships, or deeper industry knowledge, this event promises to equip you with the insights and connections needed to thrive in this evolving landscape.

Sustainable Innovation Forum 2024

Posted on: October 24th, 2024 by ccsaEditor

The Sustainable Innovation Forum 2024 returns for its 16th annual edition during COP29, organised by Climate Action and other leading global partners; bringing together 1,000 global sustainability leaders across all sectors including business, heavy industry, finance, government and civil society to promote transformative innovation and tangible climate action to help us go further, faster together.

Despite strong commitments at COP28, increasing regulation in Europe and incredible technological advancements the world over, we are still falling far short of the required scale and speed necessary to rewire the global economy and stabilise the world’s climate at 1.5°C. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) recently announced that annual average global temperature will temporarily exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for at least one of the next five years. As UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres declared, “We need an exit ramp off the highway to climate hell.”

Taking place from 13-14th November in the heart of Baku and forming the flagship forum of the Climate Action Innovation Zone, the Sustainable Innovation Forum aims to redress this by bringing global leaders, corporate and financial executives, innovators, and government representatives together to deep dive into challenges, share successes and collaborate on solutions. The Forum does not require Blue Zone accreditation, ensuring an inclusive platform and gathering for all key stakeholders and decision makers.
