About the report launch reception 

The report launch “CCS in the UK – Infrastructure to Unlock Investment” reception will take place on Monday, November 21st at Carlton House in London –  (10-11 Carlton House Terrace, London, SW1Y 5AH). 

During the first half of the evening, you will hear from senior sector leaders who have contributed to the report, who will be speaking about the report’s recommendations and the overall UK’s approach to CCS. This event is free to attend, and particularly relevant for policy, academic and private sector leaders.  

 There will be an opportunity for policy, academic and private sector leaders to network and meet with each other after the first half of the event.

About the report  

Current projects to capture or remove carbon globally are nowhere near enough to meet the world’s climate targets. According to 2018 IPCC report, to limit global warming to 1.5 °C we will need to remove between 100 – 1000 GtCO₂ from the atmosphere over the 21st century. The UK Government has committed to capturing 47Mt of carbon dioxide by 2050, requiring a major upscale of current carbon management operations, thus there is a need for a robust deployment plan to encourage adoption of such technologies.  

The report explores the potential for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) to help achieve net zero targets with a particular focus on the UK’s CCUS hubs. The objective of the report, which PPP carried out in partnership with Third Way, was to address barriers to wider deployment of CCS projects in the UK, while also focusing on wider issues surrounding their financing, regulation and policy. 

It draws on a series of features, case studies, webinars, interviews and roundtables carried out throughout 2022. Throughout its development, Public Policy Projects (PPP) has consulted cross-sector stakeholders in the UK from private and public sectors, as well as senior leaders in several countries including Brad Crabtree, Assistant Secretary for the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management at the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and the Climate attaché to the EU Delegation to the UK Emilien Gasc. 

A symposium on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) for Geoscientists

In many ways the CCS world with its wells, reservoirs and sealing cap-rocks will be familiar to PESGB members. However, in other ways it will be quite different. The twin necessities of driving costs down and ensuring long-term public safety will demand collaboration and openness like never before.

In response to demand from the PESGB membership, we have scheduled this one-day symposium on the geoscience aspects of geological CO₂ storage. The conveners are soliciting oral presentations from industry experts to meet the goal of offering deep technical insights into G&G topics pertinent to CCS.

If you are a petroleum-geoscientist considering ‘what next’ in a changing world, this event is designed for you. CCS is essential in meeting the worlds Net Zero targets. The anticipated exponential growth of CCS projects worldwide will need a major effort to re-purpose skills from the oil and natural gas industry.

Following the first session of PPPs report on Carbon Management that looked at the UK approach to carbon management, the next session will be focusing on international approaches to carbon capture and carbon removal.

Representatives from United States, South Korea and Australia will give evidence to the PPP Commissioners in an open-session webinar at first, followed by a private discussion, under Chatham House rule. They will touch on how carbon capture and carbon removal infrastructure and technologies are progressing in their countries while also looking at barriers and issues they face. The objective of this session is to discuss and share common solutions to problems that they all face.

In addition to listening to experiences from different countries, this session will also seek to answer the following questions:

• What can the UK experience in Carbon Capture Usage and Storage offer other countries such as the US and Europe?
• What can the UK learn from the experience of other countries abroad?
• How can CCUS and DAC projects internationally better cooperate among themselves?

Permanent CO₂ storage plays a key role in Europe’s climate change mitigation efforts. Today we see market-ready projects being developed across depleted oil and gas fields in the North Sea. These projects, such as Porthos or Northern Lights, are forerunners for many more that must still be developed to ensure we achieve climate neutrality. But the success of these projects relies on clear guidance that provides operators with regulatory certainty. The lessons learned by today’s projects can provide valuable guidance for public authorities and future CO₂ storage projects.

Learning and sharing experience, as well as promoting best practices, will be crucial as the European Commission updates its Guidance Documents for the Directive on the geological storage of CO₂. This implies a clear approach to the functional requirements for effective CO₂ storage: guidance should be simple, and public authorities need to engage early and often with CCS projects, enhance cooperation and communication among stakeholders.

The CCUS All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) AGM chaired by Alex Cunningham MP took place on Tuesday the 29th of March, followed by an in-depth presentation and discussion on the CCSA’s “CCUS Delivery Plan 2035”.

This meeting provided MPs and Peers, as well as CCSA Members, external stakeholders and members of the public, with an opportunity to learn more about the Delivery Plan, the methodology of the work and the key conclusions & actions.

The CCUS Delivery Plan 2035 sets out the industry view of the build-out rates for Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) in the UK that could deliver the Government’s Net Zero Strategy ambition of storing 50Mt CO₂ per year by 2035.  The Plan also identifies critical actions to enable scaling up of the UK industry in line with this ambition.

The UKCCSRC is pleased to be hosting another series of industry and policy led ‘what are our research needs workshops’. The virtual workshops are intended to inform UK researchers and identify the key research needs, which will be published and linked to the scope of the next UKCCSRC flexible funding call in early 2022. The workshops will include a series of presentations from industry, policy makers and regulators. Following the presentations, there will be an exercise to identify the key research areas with input from other industry, policy makers and regulators on the call. The final part of the workshop will be opened up for UK academic questions, mainly around clarification of the research needs that have been identified.
